Run your hand down the side of your RV. If your palm comes back white and chalky, your RV has oxidation. It is one of the most common problems we see on motorhomes, fifth wheels and travel trailers across Dallas–Fort Worth, and the Texas sun makes it worse every summer.
The good news: most oxidation can be removed and the shine brought back. The honest news: how much work it takes depends on how far it has gone, and once in a while it has gone too far to fully save. Here is what causes it, how to tell how bad yours is, and what to expect from a restoration.
What Is RV Oxidation?
Most RVs are finished in gel coat, a hard, glossy resin layer over fiberglass. When UV light, heat and oxygen break down the top of that layer, it turns dull and powdery. That powder is the chalk you feel. Over time the color fades, the stripes and graphics lose their pop, and the surface gets rough and porous, so it collects dirt and black streaks faster.
What Causes It?
Sun. UV rays are the number one cause, and North Texas gets plenty.
Heat. Hot surfaces break down faster, especially dark graphics and the roof line.
Parking outside. Rigs stored uncovered age much faster than rigs under a cover or carport.
No protection. Wax or sealant is the gel coat's sunscreen. Skip it and the gel coat takes the hit.
Harsh washing. Strong degreasers, dish soap and high-pressure wands up close can strip protection and speed things up.
The front cap and the sunny side usually go first, which is why we see so many coaches with a faded front and a decent back half.
The Levels of Oxidation (and How We Fix Each One)
Every RV is different, so we always look at the finish in person and test a small spot before we quote. In general, oxidation falls into four levels.
Level 1: Light
What it looks like: The finish looks dull or flat instead of glossy. You may get a light chalky film on your finger.
How we fix it: A one-step machine polish removes the dull layer and brings back the gloss in a single pass, followed by wax or sealant to protect it.
Level 2: Moderate
What it looks like: Obvious chalk when you wipe it, faded color and graphics that look washed out.
How we fix it: A multi-step correction: a cutting compound to remove the damaged layer, then a polish to refine the finish and bring back depth, then protection.
Level 3: Heavy
What it looks like: Thick white haze, a rough texture and color that looks bleached. The chalk comes off on everything.
How we fix it: Heavy oxidation often needs wet sanding first. We work through several grits of sandpaper to level off the dead gel coat, then compound, polish and protect. It takes more time, but the before and after can be dramatic.
Level 4: Too Far Gone
What it looks like: The gel coat is worn thin or through, you can see fiberglass texture, or there is cracking, crazing or peeling.
What we will tell you: Sometimes there is not enough gel coat left for a full restoration, because polishing cannot rebuild material that is gone. If that is the case, we will tell you straight before any work starts. In many of these cases we can still offer a budget-friendly option that makes a real improvement in how your RV looks, and we will walk you through what to expect.
What Does Oxidation Removal Cost?
Every project is different. The price depends on the size of your RV, its condition, where it is parked and the result you are after. Most oxidation removal projects run from about $1,000 to $5,000. The best way to know is a quick look in person or a few photos sent to us.
How Long Does It Take?
20 to 30 foot motorhome: usually 4 to 6 hours.
45-foot coach with severe oxidation: about a full 8-hour day with a four-person crew.
The heaviest restorations with wet sanding and decal removal: typically 2 to 3 days, working 8 to 10 hour days.
What to Expect From a Restoration
Inspection and test spot. We check the gel coat, the graphics and any trouble areas, and test a small section so we both know what result to expect.
A clear quote based on your RV and your goals.
Wash first. Every restoration starts with a full hand wash and spot-free rinse so we work on a clean surface.
Correction. One-step polish, multi-step compound and polish, or wet sanding, depending on the level.
Protection. We finish with wax or sealant so the shine lasts.
After Your Restoration: How to Keep the Shine
Once the oxidation is removed and the finish is polished, the most important thing is protecting it. A fresh finish left unprotected in the Texas sun will start to oxidize again.
Use the right soap. Wash with a pH-neutral, RV-safe wash soap. Avoid dish soap, degreasers and harsh all-purpose cleaners, which strip wax and dry out gel coat.
Use soft tools. A soft-bristle brush or microfiber mitt, and rinse with clean water. Keep pressure washers at a safe distance from the finish and decals.
Protect it with wax or sealant. Use a wax or sealant made for gel coat and fiberglass with UV protection. A polymer sealant or ceramic-based spray lasts longer than a basic paste wax.
Reapply on a schedule. In Texas, plan to rewax or reseal every 3 to 6 months, and closer to every 3 months if your RV sits in full sun.
Cover or shade it. Park under a carport or cover when you can, or face the front cap away from the afternoon sun.
Let us handle it. Our wash and spray wax keeps a protective layer on between bigger details, and our Front Cap Polish add-on is a cost-effective fix for the area that oxidizes first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can all oxidation be removed? Most can. Light to heavy oxidation can usually be corrected. If the gel coat is worn through, polishing will not bring it back, but we can often still improve it on a budget, and we will tell you before we start.
Will polishing damage my decals? We work carefully around graphics. Decals that are already cracked or peeling may not survive any restoration, and we will point those out up front.
How long will the shine last? With regular washing and a fresh coat of protection every few months, a restored finish can look great for a long time. Skip the upkeep and the sun will start the process over.
Do you come to me? Yes. We are fully mobile and work at your home, storage lot or RV park anywhere in Dallas–Fort Worth.
